5 Ways To Update Your 10 Year Old Home

Imagine this: It’s 2015 and you just purchased a new home in Central Ohio. You can’t wait to update the space. First up you paint the cabinets white and your island gray and open shelving in the kitchen is a must have. You add in industrial elements such as edison bulbs and metal fixtures, put up a barn door, and add subway tile to your kitchen and your bathroom. Your color pallet contains cool tones and all things gray. You rip out all of the bushes and add low maintenance landscaping.

If you remember hopping on these trends and you haven’t updated your home in the last few years, let Natassja Designs help you update your kitchen, bathroom, or exterior! Here are five trends from 2015 and how to update them!

Gray Everything→ Warmer, Earthy Tones.

In 2015, the color gray was king! It dominated walls, furniture, and decor. Chances are if you purchased or built your home in 2015, you added a healthy amount of gray to your home.

How to Update: In 2025, we are opting for more nature inspired tones like greige, taupe, and soft earthy colors (beige, clay, terracotta, warm white) are preferred. We offer a color consultation for $99 and would love to help you select a color palette that suits your taste and your home.

White Shaker Cabinets and Open Shelving → Bold Colors,Wood Tones, and Closed Storage Glass Cabinets

Ten years ago, everyone traded their 2000’s honey oak kitchen cabinets for all white shaker cabinets. Many traded all of their upper cabinets for open shelving, encouraging people to have their dishes as a sort of decor.

How to Update: Design in 2025 is adding upper cabinets back into the mix and finding a neutral ground by having glass cabinets while accenting with a few open shelves. We are using deep greens, navy, and black for cabinet colors or stunning light or medium wood cabinetry for a natural look.

Subway Tile Backsplash → Zellige and Textured Tile

You couldn’t walk into a BIA Parade of Homes house or a new build without seeing the white subway tile with dark grout. Every modern farmhouse style home subscribed to it. It was EVERYWHERE.

How to Update: While subway tile is classic, in 2025 we are trading white subway tile for colorful ceramic tiles, uniquely shaped tile, tiles with a handmade look (Zellige is an example of this) and marble slabs. The texture and colors of these options give tons of character to a space.

Gray and Cool Toned Exteriors → Warm Neutrals and Darker Colors

In 2015, we LOVED a gray or white home. Clean. Simple. Cool. If you were driving through a neighborhood in Central Ohio in 2015 you would see SO MANY cool white or gray homes.

How To Update: In 2025 we are painting homes with beautiful deep moody colors (like navy, dark green, and charcoal), warmer whites, and taupe. Pairing these tones with popular additions like cedar wrapped beams and lush landscaping gives your home curb appeal.

Barn Doors → Pocket and Fluted Glass Doors

Ten years ago barn doors ruled the market. If you had a doorway that needed covered, rustic barn doors were a stylish, low profile but high impact way to add doors to bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms.

How to Update: If your style has moved away from the modern farmhouse style and you would like to update, in 2025 we are using pocket doors, fluted or reeded glass doors and modern steel framed partitions to offer a sleeker alternative to rustic barn doors. We can also use your same track system for a sleeker more modern or MCM door in one easy swap.

Your personal style should be reflected throughout your home and working with Natassja Designs, Interior Designers in Central Ohio, we can help you find ways to update your style without abandoning what you love about your home! Not sure if you need to update? Check out this blog post!
